Obituary for Karl George O'Konis

Karl George O'Konis, 74, lifelong resident of Enfield, beloved husband of Nancy (Loftus) O'Konis, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 8, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital. He was born on December 20, 1941, in Springfield, MA, a son of the late John and Ione (Fernholz) O'Konis. Karl received his Bachelors degree in Business Management from Charter Oak College and later received his Associates degree from Asnuntuck Community College; he was employed by Aetna where he retired after 35 years. He served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. He was a communicant of St. Bernard Church and the President of the Enfield Historical Society. He enjoyed collecting German notgeld, woodcarving, and antique cars. He was an avid traveler, he enjoyed river cruises, traveling to Europe and was very proud that he traveled to all 50 states. In addition to his wife Nancy, he is survived by two children Kenneth O'Konis and his wife Angela of Broad Brook and Jennifer DiPoppo and her husband Mark of Windsor Locks; six grandchildren, Patrick, Rudy, Natalie, and Kenneth O'Konis and Nicole and Matthew DiPoppo; and four brothers, John O'Konis and his wife Caroline of Stafford Springs, James O'Konis and his wife Patricia of Newington, Robert O'Konis and his wife Susan of Enfield, and Richard O'Konis and his wife Maureen of Buffalo Grove, IL. Relatives and friends may join the family for calling hours on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield, CT. A funeral procession will gather on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. at the funeral home for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bernard Church, 426 Hazard Ave, Enfield, CT. Burial will follow in St. Bernard Cemetery. Memorial donations in Karl's memory may be made to Enfield Historical Society, P.O. Box 586, Enfield, CT 06083.
