Elizabeth C. "Betty"  Haverly (Chambers)
Elizabeth "Betty" (Chambers) Haverly of Somers, CT and former resident of Palm Harbor, FL and Homer, NY passed away peacefully at home in Somers on Monday, July 25, 2016. Elizabeth was born in Walton, New York on September 17, 1918, the daughter of the late James A. Chambers and Agnes M. (Rutherford) Chambers. Betty grew up on a dairy farm and was the youngest of five siblings; David, Telford, Carlton, Lynn and Mary. She graduated from Walton High School in 1937 where she excelled on the women's high school basketball team. She went on to attend Rochester Teachers' College and became a dental hygienist, working in Baldwin Long Island High School. In 1942, Betty married her high school sweetheart, Dr. Lloyd Haverly and they lived in Homer, New York for 37 years. While in Homer, she served for 23 years on the Homer Recreation Commission. She was instrumental in the creation of Briggs's Pool and Durkee Park. Betty loved gardening and earned a master's degree in Japanese flower arranging. She was a member of the Homer Garden Club and served on the Executive Board of the Federated Garden Club of New York State. She loved antiques and became an authority on 19th century statuary made by Casper Hennecke and John Rogers. Her many talents led her to create a flower arranging business which included seasonal flower arrangements for banks, restaurants and weddings and a Christmas Shoppe at her home in Homer. Upon retirement, Betty and Lloyd moved to Palm Harbor, Florida and took up the game of golf. Betty's athleticism and love for the game was apparent, as she became club champion on more than one occasion. In Somers, Betty enjoyed attending the Enfield Adult Day Center. She was a competitive BINGO player and loved the arts and crafts, exercise classes, the attendants and numerous friends she made. Betty will be remembered for her beautiful smile and greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Lloyd F. Haverly, and her son Fred R. Haverly. Betty is survived by her daughter Barbara Smigel and her husband Jeffrey; daughter Nancy Hindes and her husband Michael; Fred Haverly's wife, Shari; her grandchildren Robert Haverly and his wife Becky; Amy Clark and her husband Michael; Jason Smigel and his wife, Allison; Austin Smigel and his wife Amy; Brent Robinson and Nathan Robinson. She leaves behind seven great grandchildren. Christine, Alexa and Andrew Haverly; Nick Younker and Katie Clark; Aden and Gavin Smigel; and Mason and Tess Smigel. The family would like to thank Betty's compassionate caregivers, friends, and chauffeurs who helped make Betty's transition to Connecticut a positive experience. All services for Elizabeth will be private with family in Florida in Florida at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens in Palm Harbor, Florida.
