Obituary

Obituary for Michael B. Heneghan

Michael Bryan Heneghan of Windsor Locks, CT peacefully passed away January 6, 2019. He was 71 years old. Mike loved his family, friends, and camping. He had a lifelong passion for sports. His devotion of over 45 years to the youth of Windsor Locks, CT was remarkable.

Mike was born in Columbus, OH on June 10, 1947 to the late John and Catherine (Schirtzinger) Heneghan. Mike moved to Windsor Locks in the fourth grade. There, he met his wife Kathy (Heintz) at Pesci Park during the summer of 1972. They married in 1975 and raised their family in the town they loved. Sports were a big part of Coach Heneghan’s life. Coaching youth sports was his calling. He ran distance for Windsor Locks High School. He then went on to coach a large and successful youth track team for the town in the 1970s. He coached soccer and basketball—with many years spent running a CYO basketball program and the town’s 6th Grade All-Star program. He was a 45-year veteran coach of Little League baseball, leading the VFW team. He served as a Little League Administrator and travel basketball co-ordinator. He was a vice president of Connecticut Junior Soccer as well as the Windsor Locks Soccer Director. In addition, Mike served as a baseball and softball umpire, a basketball referee, and a soccer official. He enjoyed watching his son and daughter compete in sporting events—elementary school through college.

Mike began his career working as the Physical Education Instructor at St. Mary School. He sold insurance for the Knights of Columbus. The majority of his career was spent working for the State of Connecticut’s Department of Administrative Services. He served as Safety Coordinator, Fleet Operations for most of his 35-year tenure.

Mike is survived by his immediate family—his wife of 43 years, Kathy (Heintz); his son, Daniel Heneghan of Springfield, MA; his daughter, Maureen Heneghan of Bronx, NY; and his favorite dog, Bailey. He will be missed by his brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Sally Heneghan of Agawam, MA; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margaret and Henry Hill of Torrington, CT; his brother-in-law, Joseph Griskewicz of Windsor Locks, CT; his nephew,Joseph Heneghan and his wife Amy of Westfield, MA; his nephew,Geoffrey Blum of West Hartford, CT; his niece, Kelly (Griskewicz) Goughary and her husband Robert of Fairfield, CT; and his nephew, Joseph Griskewicz of Windsor, CT.

Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family during visiting hours on Sunday, January 13, 2019, from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring St., Windsor Locks. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am on Monday, January 14, 2019 at St. Mary Church, 42 Spring St., Windsor Locks, CT. Kathy, Dan and Maureen; I was so sorry to hear of Mike’s passing. Although I had known him throughout my youth in WL it wasn’t until I started to coach the youth of WL myself that I really got to know him. His counsel to me was immeasurable and I tried to use many of his coaching methods and philosophies with my own teams. But it was his blending of these methods with life’s everyday lessons that made him unique in my eyes – something that every youth coach should emulate. I loved refereeing the middle school basketball games with him for many years; working and coaching side-by-side with him in Little League baseball; but it was our time together coaching and maintaining the legacy of the 6th Grade All-Star basketball program that I will especially cherish. He was truly one of the good ones and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
